Kiss Recording Blues

I’m home on a quick pit stop on the six week family road trip here in Sweden. I had set my Kiss DP-558 recorder to record all my favourite shows – Rome, Into the West, 24 – while I was gone. Of course nothing got recorded, for some reason the recorder has not downloaded the recording schedule 🙁
Several weeks of episodes lost. My guess is that the recorder has lost its internet connection and I don’t think it even tries to re-establish it…

When recording a series the recording schedule is downloaded 24 hrs prior to each episode. Also the EPG only have programming available for the coming week, so the recording schedule needs to be updated several times during a long vacation. This is usually done every 15 minutes.
You can schedule recordings manually without using the EPG but for some reason repeating schedules is not a feature available on the Kiss recorder – you know the thing that’s been available since the dawn of VCRs – “record this every thursday”.

Just when I thought I had figured this machine out and even started to like it, this happens…
Well, weather is great and I still have another week of vacation, off to the island of Gotland before I’m getting back to work 🙂

P.s.
Rumour has it a new firmware – 1.1.7 – is in the works and should be available in September.

  1. Tip: If you have reset your KiSS hardrive, you might have to reset the EPG password (somewhere in the settings menu I think). I just installed the 1.1.7 firmware version, and it seems to be working okey.

What I would love to see, is that KiSS would release all the code under GPL – and let the opensource community make it a real killer machine (at http://www.mpcclub.com for example)

  2. Er, what I meant was: I you for some reason have reset your harddrive, you might need to reenter your EPG password in order to have EPG working. If your player displays “EPG Check” when you press the “store” button, it should be okey.

  3. Thanks for the tip jdaz, though I already knew about that one (yet another bug you would wish they’d fix).

Agree with you on the open source idea. I think a company like Kiss has nothing to loose and all to gain from doing that, since they don’t make their money from selling software but from selling hardware – which would probably sell better if the software worked… 😉

Will check out the new firmware withing the next few days.

  4. how do you reset this piece of ****…? I understand the eject button and 1,2,3 but where is the clear button?

  5. Peter, do you mean resetting the hard drive? Then you should – from your remote – press Eject + Back button + 6 + 7 + 8. You will then need to wait up to 60 seconds before you go into Setup where on the top of the screen should read “Hard Disk not setup”. If it does not say so, try again…
